Asymptomatic Patients with a Family History of Breast Cancer

(Not for those with breast symptoms, under the breast team or with other non family-history related breast queries)

  • Known genetic fault history(e.g. BRCA1 or 2):  refer directly to Peninsula Genetics
  • Family history of breast cancer:
    • Review according to NICE 2013 guidelines (see diagram and link below.
    • If meeting criteria then refer to “Family History clinic” at the Mermaid Centre (for risk assessment and onward referral to genetics team if eligible for testing)
  • Advice & Guidance:  available via e-referral A&G system (do not write directly)

Inform patient:

1. They will be sent a link to a secure web-based app where they will be asked to complete family history details (paper-based still an option for those who need it).
2. A risk assessment will then be made and patient will receive letter detailing any screening they need
3. Patient will be offered an opportunity for a telephone call if required or family history more complex.
