Ultrasound Guided Injections

  • Joint guidance for corticosteroid use in musculoskeletal and rheumatic conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic is available here.
  • Current local guidelines for referral for musculoskeletal corticosteroid injections are available here.

Where primary care management has failed, the Musculoskeletal Interface Service can assist with injections about the shoulder and knee joints, and for greater trochanteric pain syndrome at the hip.

Referral specifically for USS-guided injection of the shoulder, knee and hip joints is not recommended.

Hip joint injections are usually carried out by the Orthopaedic team and should be referred according to guidance below.

Shoulder guidance is available here.

Knee guidance is available here.

Hip guidance is available here.

Morton’s Neuroma

  • Current guidance is available here. It is recommended that at least one attempt at ‘blind’ injection is performed before considering referral for USS-guided injection at RCHT. Requests should be made using the direct access USS form.

Plantar Fasciitis

  • Current guidance is available here. USS-guided injection can be arranged at RCHT if no benefit from at least one attempt at ‘blind’ injection in primary care. Requests should be made using the direct access USS form.
