Nasal Congestion

DEFINITION

The sensation of congestion. May or may not be associated with physical nasal obstruction.

MANAGEMENT OPTIONS

Usually due to acute viral URTI or allergy therefore supportive treatment as appropriate.

Sympathomimetic decongestants provide immediate relief of obstructive symptoms and can be useful for short periods.
However prolonged (>1week) or repetitive use can lead to rebound symptoms and dependence.
Studies show that modern topical nasal steroids are more effective long term (at least 4 weeks with good compliance) and therefore are a good alternative.

For persistent symptoms consider the development of sinusitis. Further guidance can be found here
