ENT Procedures of Limited Clinical Benefit
Commissioned but criteria apply
Strict commissioning criteria apply to the following ENT surgeries:
- Removal of ear wax in secondary care
- Insertion of grommets, including in the treatment of glue ear
- Tonsillectomy for recurrent tonsillitis
- Septorhinoplasty
- Adenoidectomy
- Surgical intervention for chronic rhinosinusitis
- CPAP for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea or hypopnoea syndrome
- Snoring surgery in the absence of chronic rhinosinusitis
- Replacement hearing aid
- Laryngeal or voice box surgery
Not an exhaustive list.
Not routinely commissioned
The following procedures are not routinely commissioned and will only be funded on the NHS following a successful Individual Funding Request:
- Shave or surgical rhinophyma
- Congenital ear deformity correction surgery, including pinnaplasty (this does not apply to hearing loss associated with microtia and congenital aural atresia)
- Rhinoplasty
- Split ear lobe repair

Minimum Referral Information
- If strict commissioning criteria applies, the referral must evidence how the criteria are met. Please see the NHS CIOS Commissioning policies and evidence-based interventions for more information.
- If not routinely commissioned, the referral must include a copy of the approved / successful individual funding request.
- Details of condition requiring treatment.
- Confirmation that the patient wishes to pursue surgical intervention.
