Sexual Health Services

 

This guideline applies to people aged 16 and over.

13yrs and over can access the C-card scheme for free condoms.

 

Introduction

Brook is the only provider of specialist sexual health services for Cornwall and Isles of Scilly residents of all ages.  HIV services are available at RCHT.        

 

Services provided by Brook


Psychosexual counselling

For men with:  erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory disorders (rapid, delayed), orgasmic disorders, hypoactive sexual desire disorder

For women with: vaginismus, dyspareunia, orgasmic disorders, arousal disorder, hypoactive sexual desire disorder

 

Inclusion criteria for Psychosexual counselling:

  • Sexual problem that has persisted for a few months
  • The problem is likely to be caused or maintained by psychological factors, even though physical factors may be relevant.
  • The couple’s general relationship is reasonably harmonious
  • The female partner is not pregnant, and pregnancy is not the goal for therapy.
  • The disorder is not a side effect of medical treatment.
  • There are no current severe psychiatric disorders.
  • Substance abuse is not the feature of the relationship.

 

Chlamydia Screening Programme

  • Helps 15-24 year olds to access Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea testing and treatment as well as education.

 

Free condoms

  • The C-Card condom distribution service enables young people aged 13-24 to access free condoms, internal condoms (femidoms) and lubricant from a number of outlets.
  • Over 25s can still access free condoms and lube from any Brook clinic as well as some GP surgeries and pharmacies.

 

Services NOT provided by Brook

  • Treatment for HIV (this is provided by RCHT).
  • Hepatitis vaccination or testing for work or travel purposes
  • Management of community/occupational needlestick injuries or bites
  • STI testing and proof of results for non-sexual health reasons, e.g. work, medical treatment
  • Occupational blood borne virus (BBV) screening

 

  • Contraceptive servicesfor non-contraceptive reasons eg delay periods or heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB)
  • Patients who are not sexually active and do not anticipate having sex.
  • Treatment of PCOS or endometriosis beyond the use of contraception
  • Fertility treatment
  • Abortion care: Brook can provide counselling only.
  • Menopause/HRT or the replacement of IUS when used as the progestogenic component of HRT.
  • Cervical screening
  • Colposcopy

 

  • HPV vaccination for school-aged children (this is offered as part of the school immunisation programme)
  • Treatment of recurrent BV/thrush
  • Balanitis
  • Genital dermatological conditionthat is unrelated to a sexual health issue.
