Nasal Irrigation
This guideline applies to children and adults.
Introduction
Nasal irrigation helps to reduce post-nasal drainage, as well as rinsing away secretions, allergens and irritants.
It should be performed before using any nasal spray, drops or ointment, not after.
Patients can make their own home-made solution or alternatively there are multiple different preparations of nasal saline irrigation available over the counter e.g. NeilMed Sinus Rinse, Sterimar products. Further advice regarding OTC preparations is available from local pharmacists.
Home-made nasal saline solution
Makes
4 applications
Preparation
Mix together:
- 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 pint (568ml) of partly cooled boiled water (aim for body temperature)
Application
- Stand in front of a sink.
- Cup the palm of one hand and pour a small amount of the mixture into it.
- Sniff it into the nostril.
- Don’t worry if it flows out of the other nostril or down the back of your throat – this means it is washing your nose – spit it out if necessary.
- Its normal to experience some mild irritation at the start, but this should settle with time.
- Continue until the nose feels more comfortable.
Make a fresh mixture each time it is needed.
